fish face – darlinghurst

When it comes to the best fish restaurant in Sydney there are two choices. If your wallet is well stocked and you’re in the mood for something fancy with water views then Pier in Rose Bay is the business and has been for many many years. But if you are after a more casual setting with a much more casual price tag then FishFace in Darlinghurst is the place to go.

It’s the perfect setting for a good gossipy catchup with an ex-colleague and top fun single girlfriend. Even if it is a rainy Friday when Sydney turns torrential.

It’s the type of little place that I often run into people I know and they’re always having fun and raving about whatever they’re eating. It’s also the type of place where you may randomly meet the love of your life. Definitely has that friendly neighbourhood thing going on.

loved

the fish & chips. sweet sweet flathead battered and served in a paper cone with house made tartare – so hard to go past
carpaccio of bream – a special for the evening with a seriously addictive fresh ponzu sauce.
the busy vibe
BYO – great fun to be able to bring something special from the cellar
being able to walk in and get a table straight away
the professional and engaging service – responded really well to my mate’s food allergies which includes pretty much all nuts and seeds except peanuts.
watching highly strung but brilliant chef and proprietor duck out for once cigarette after another

didn’t love

can’t think of a single thing.

ate

carpaccio of bream with ponzu dressing
fish & chips with tartare sauce
kingfish with scallop potatoes, anchovies & squid dressing
watercress salad with witlof, radish & mustard dressing
on previous visits have enjoyed:
salmon ‘pastrami’
bream with potato scales
snapper with beetroot & capers

drank

BYO – corkage $5 per person

value

great for the quality – $120 for 2

reservations

taken by phone for 6.30 sitting and then it’s walk in only after that. we got straight in at 7pm on a friday night but the darlo bar is just across the road if you need to wait.

perfect for

seriously good fish with a casual vibe

Haven’t been for ages, but you have reminded me how wonderful it is, and I may just head there this Friday night!

Nao,
You have to go. The snapper is divine. They serve the fish and tell you to start eating from the thinnest end as the thicker parts are still cooking while you eat. so clever. I took mum there a few times because she loved fish so much. We had great fun. (and used to walk down to yellow for dessert afterwards!)
love you too xx
