You know that little neighborhood wine bar-come-restaurant that you’ve always dreamed of living around the corner from? A friendly casual place, where the lights aren’t too bright, the menu is simple but excellent and changes daily, and the wine list is long an interesting? Well Vini is that place. If only I lived in Surry Hills.
Each time I go to Vini, I enjoy it more and more. And I started with high expectations, so that’s saying something.
Keen to try out their newly opened sister restaurant – berta [www.berta.com.au]
loved
the duck crostini
the simple roast beets with cannellini beans – an unusual pairing that really works
the fresh pasta
the charming italian waiter
the dark, moody, modern decor
the seamless service dealing with an order misunderstanding (risotto, not rotolo – easy mistake)
the prices – always amazing value
the simple menu that’s always changing
didn’t love
risotto a bit on the chalky side for my liking, but beautiful flavours with fresh sweet prawns and hits of tangy preserved lemon
ate
roast duck, radicchio & chickpea crostini
baby beets with cannellini beans & roasted walnuts
risotto of prawns, cime di rapa & preserved lemon
taglitelle with rabbit, black olives & rosemary
drank
very abstemious (was dining with a pregnant lady)
sparkling water
orange peyoke tea
value
brilliant $66 for 2
reservations
no taken but if you call on the night they’ll put your name on the list
