Bourke Street Bakery has built a reputation on seriously good, rustic bakery products. Everything they touch (maybe with the exception of pizza) turns to calorie gold.
It’s the perfect neighborhood bakery. Part cafe, part bread supplier it’s the type of place where people will queue just to buy a loaf of sourdough. I even heard a French girl once saying she thought their croissants were better than most specimens found in Paris these days.
While I’m on a rave, I also have a copy of their cookbook which lives up to the name of ‘the ultimate baking companion’. It’s now my go-to book for pastry in all it’s form. I have a secret project to cook everything out of the book at least once in my lifetime – not something I’d even consider for most books on my shelf.
For a while I was a little disappointed with their plain sourdough but picking up a loaf over the weekend for life-saving bacon sandwiches, I’m happy to report that it is once again a contender for my favourite bread in Sydney (although Iggy still has the upper hand).
